Mayor Beng Climaco and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde will spearhead the observance of the Rizal Day marking the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal in Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park, 119 years ago today. Dec. 30.

The activity will kick off 7am with a flag-raising ceremony and wreath-laying rites at the Rizal Shrine in front of City Hall. It will be followed by a commemorative program that will be participated by representatives from the cross-section of the city.

Themed “Rizalism: The Key to Global Peace, Solidarity and Prosperity,” the event is jointly organized by the City Government and the Knights of Rizal.

Jose Rizal was executed Dec. 29, 1896 after the military court found him guilty of rebellion, sedition and conspiracy. The Spanish authorities believed that his writings “fatally and necessarily” incited rebellion that led to a revolution in 1896.

The conduct of the nationwide commemoration of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal is pursuant to a Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) memorandum circular enjoining all local government units to conduct simultaneous activities on Dec. 30. — Sheila Covarrubias
