The city government recently released some P9 million for salaries of students hired under the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) last May.
City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo said all SPES beneficiaries this year were already compensated with the students from Barangay Taguiti as the last group to collect their wages June 29 concluding the program for 2011.

SPES, a nationwide program is jointly undertaken by the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office. Under the program, the city government shoulders 60 percent of the students’ salaries while the DOLE funds the 40 percent of the salaries.

Barredo said the release of salaries for the Taguiti students who belonged the second batch of SPES beneficiaries marked the official conclusion of the yearly summer job program although their wages were made available as early as the third week of June.

From the initial two-batch program, Mayor Celso Lobregat ordered the addition of one more batch to benefit more students who were given the opportunity to earn an income and help them in their educational needs this school year.

For the first two batches, the City contributed the 60% of the students’ 20-day wage while DOLE covered the 40%. For the third batch, however, the City shouldered the entire amount.
Barredo said an increased number of student-beneficiaries is expected next year since the present administration is all-out in supporting social welfare programs of the City. — City Hall PIO
