People from all walks of life trooped to the Rizal Shrine fronting City Hall early Wednesday morning, December 30 to commemorate the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in a ceremony themed “Rizalism: The Key to Global Peace, Solidarity and Prosperity.”

Mayor Beng Climaco and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde led the ceremony that started 7am with the flag raising ceremony and wreath-laying rites. A simple but meaningful program followed with the vice mayor reading the mayor’s message.

Mayor Climaco hoped that people of the present generation will never overlook the sacrifices and most especially the ideals and values espoused by Rizal which he said if pursued can be a key to peace, solidarity and prosperity not only in the country but globally. The mayor had to leave the ceremony ahead of time, as she was part of the welcoming party for Local Government Secretary Senen Sarmiento at the airport Wednesday morning.

Vice Mayor Iturralde thanked the representatives from the cross-section of the city who turned up for the early morning program despite the holiday.

In the message, Iturralde said Rizal’s life was packed with varied activities which proved that the Filipino has the capacity to equal if not excel even those who treat him as a slave.

Rizal was shot to death December 30, 1896 or 119 years ago in Bagumbayan, now known as Luneta Park after he was convicted of rebellion, sedition and forming an illegal association. — Sheila Covarrubias
