The City Government is fully supporting the Regional Development Council’s priority programs for 2016-2017 citing its impact to the residents and the city in general.

The RDC has listed 12 priority programs of which 6 will be based in Zamboanga City. These include the Western Mindanao Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, halfway house for Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga Ecozone International world class seaport, rehabilitation of the ZC Fish Port Complex, establishment of the National Seaweed Center and the transfer of the Zamboanga International Airport.

City Investment Promotions Officer Angelique Go said the transfer of the airport is number one in the list with date of implementation 2016-2018 which means that the project will start within the time frame. Based on the Feasibility Study conducted by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), the identified area is Mercedes-Talabaan.

Based on the NEDA priority plan, the airport is in tranche 2 under the 2016 Calendar.

Per feasibility study, the project will take six years to be completed, according to Go. “Meaning, this year or next year, there should be significant steps leading to its implementation.”

Nonetheless, the Investment Promotions officer said, the Master Development Plan will have to be updated with provisions concerning the proposed transfer of the airport.

The Master Plan, it is recalled is in the process of being updated along with the City land Use Plan and the Zoning Ordinance based on a contract entered into by the City Government and the Palafox and Associates firm, recently. — Sheila Covarrubias
