With education one of her top priorities, Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday, January 6, led the blessing and turnover of the new Department of Education (DepEd) building.

The two-storey Php 7.9 M building will serve as the DepEd offices to improve the quality of education in the City, said Climaco.

Climaco also expressed her hope that the new building, made possible by the concerted effort of District I representative Celso Lobregat during his term and sustained by the present administration, will serve as a home to the teachers of Zamboanga, and will encourage them to continue serving the education needs of the children.

“This [project] was started in the time of Congressman Lobregat and we need to continue on. The call is, particularly to our teachers, how do we show and translate our love for our children, for our work, and for Zamboanga? Everyday, [by] trying to exert our best to win the battle for our children and for the best of the community,” said Climaco.

Present in the simple blessing and simple rites of the new two-storey building were Rep. Celso Lobregat, Schools Division Superintendent Pete Natividad, members of the City Council, and DepEd teachers.

Natividad expressed his gratitude to both Climaco and Lobregat for making the dream of the new DepEd building a reality, and his hope for peace and unity, and a better DepEd as he takes on his new role as OIC Assistant Regional Director of the region.

“You are our great role models, we look up to you, we are dependent on you. All of us are wishing the best for all of you. We are all one in prayers for peace and unity in Zamboanga City,” said Natividad.  — Jasmine Mohammadsali
