Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday minced no word in downplaying terrorism threats as Zamboanga City continues to grow by leaps and bounds with the opening of new malls and the ongoing construction of several other business establishments in this part of the region.

Climaco issued the statement following observation by many that the city’s booming economy has made Zamboanga a juicy target for terrorists.

“I want to downplay that particular statement because I really don’t want to even think that Zamboanga is attracting terrorists. We are attracting investors, and the threats of terrorism are everywhere not only in Zamboanga,” the chief executive said in a TV interview.

She urged people to think and focus instead on the positive developments that are happening in the city. “Let us look at the advantages that we have in the city of Zamboanga, rather than the negative ones.”

Since terror threats are always there anytime and anywhere in the world nowadays, especially in progressive economies like Zamboanga and other parts of the globe, such as the United States and France, Climaco stressed the best ounce of prevention is “we do not give the terrorists any opportunity to conduct their terroristic activities in the city.”

Otherwise, she bewailed, “we will be shying investors away.” — Vic Larato
