Mayor Beng Climaco will convene the Zamboanga City Traffic Operation Management (ZCTOM) Committee Monday, January 11, to tackle plans and proposals to effectively address the mounting traffic problems in the city.

Mayor Climaco has emphasized that traffic management will be one of the main focus of her administration this year cognizant of the rapid growth and development of the city.

The ZCTOM is composed of the City government through the City Administrator’s Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the City Legal office, the Zamboanga City Police Office and the private sector and other agencies and offices.

OIC City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario said among the options being considered and up for discussion is the possible establishment of bicycle, motorcycle, and tricycle lanes, widening of old roads and opening of new roads, and converting certain areas to mini rotundas.

Other than the members of the ZCTOM other stakeholders are also expected to attend the meeting set at 3pm Monday at the City Hall conference room.

City Administrator OIC Dr. Elmeir Apolinario on Monday said the Zamboanga City Traffic Operation Management Team committee will be convened on Monday, January 11, to come up with solutions and recommendations for traffic management.

Meanwhile, the city government in coordination with the local police pursues the crackdown against traffic violators in major thoroughfares as a huge number of violators are either fined or penalized.

Based on records from the local police, a total of 27,969 traffic citations and 1,101 temporary operators’ permit were issued in 2015 as a result of the intensified campaign against traffic violators. — Sheila Covarrubias
