The Commission on Elections Regional Joint Security Coordinating Center has re-affirmed that the municipality of Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay is still its “Election Watchlist Area”.

The center reiterated this during its first meeting yesterday hosted by Police Regional Office-9 Director Chief Supt. Miguel C.  Antonio at Camp Abendan.

RJSCC-9 is chaired by Comelec Regional Director Wilfred Jay Balisado, while Antonio  is the vice chairman.

Maj. Gen. Gerardo R. Barrientos Jr., commanding general of  the army’s 1st Tabak Division based in Zamboanga del Sur, a member of the RJSCC-9, was represented in the meeting by Brig. Gen. Demy T. Tejares.

Balisado explained that Comelec is no longer using the term “hotspot” during election period. It is replaced by “ Election Watchlist Area”.

According to Balisado, Tungawan is still an “election watchlist area” because the late Mayor Randy Climaco was killed after he filed his certificate of candidacy. The killing of barangay  Chairman in Tungawan was also included.

Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office Director Sr. Supt. Michael Nicholas reported that  “the election wathlist area” in th province  is the municipality of Labangan because of its former situation as “hot spot area “during election period.

Zamboanga del Norte Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Edwin Buenaventura C. Wagan reported that his command is closely monitoring  the four municipalities of Sibuco, Sirawai, Siocon and Baliguian because of its former records as hot spot areas. But  everything in those areas are normal so far.

Chief Supt. Antonio also said that police troopers are ready to be deployed in the different areas during the May 9, 2016 election. Some police troopers have already been sent to Tungawan. — Allen Abastillas
