The Regional Competitiveness Committee (RCC) led by the Department of Trade and Industry (DT) recognized the City of Zamboanga as the most improved among cities and municipalities in region 9 for its strong performance in the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI)

Conferred during the CMCI 2015 Awards yesterday, January 19, the award gave distinction to the City’s giant leap forward in overall competitiveness ranking based on the results of the CMCI released during the 3rd Regional Competitiveness Summit last July 2015.

The City rose from rank 74 in 2014 to rank 15 in 2015 among highly urbanized cities and 14th among all cities all over the Philippines.

Mayor Beng Climaco credited the hard work and resiliency of the people of Zamboanga as instrumental in the City’s performance in the competitiveness index.

“Our story is really a story of God’s grace, hard work, and resiliency,” Climaco noted.

“We continually support the CMCI and we hope to have more in the national competition so that we will not only gauge our winning but we will also be able to gauge our competencies within us and within the other cities. Much work has to be done. With hard work, perseverance, and God’s grace, we will achieve more,” she said.

Joining the Mayor were City Planning Officer Rodrigo Sicat, Investment and Promotion Chief Apple Go, Special Assistant to the City Mayor Jose Genaro Yap-Aizon, and Business Licensing Head Benji Barredo.

Aside from the most improved LGU award, the City also received plaques of recognition for its top rank performances in the infrastructure category (Rank 3rd) and as a highly urbanized City (Rank 15th).

The CMCI is an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities developed b the National Competitiveness Council through the RCCs with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development through Project – INVEST.

Created in 2013, the Index measures Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, and Infrastructure of an LGU.

For 2015, Zamboanga City ranked third in infrastructure, 15th in Government Efficiency and 26th in Economic Dynamism. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
