A barangay chairman seeking to run for a municipal board seat in Tungawan was gunned down Wednesday night.

Police Regional Information Officer Chief Insp. Rogelio Alabata identified the fatality as Arnel Dela Cruz y Mapanao, 47, married, chairman of Bbarangay Upper Tungawan.

Dela Cruz sustained bullet wounds in the body and died on the spot.

A police report disclosed that Dela Cruz was driving a motorcycle on his way home around 6 p.m., when three men riding on another motorcycle appeared and one of them shot him at Purok 4, Upper Tungawan, .

Police said the gunmen sped away towards Zamboanga City after shooting Dela Cruz.

Police recovered two spent shells of .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Investigators were focusing their investigation on the politics angle since the victim was a supporter of the late Mayor Randy Climaco who was also shot dead in an ambush last year. – Dan Toribio Jr.
