The observance of World Interfaith Harmony Week kicks off Monday, February 1 with the theme “Celebrating Harmony: A journey towards World Peace.”

Different offices, agencies and institutions are invited to commemorate the celebration during their individual flag raising ceremonies Monday as the opening salvo. An Interfaith conference on the reflection of the present realities in the context of the common word is also set at the Royce Convention in Astoria Hotel from 1-5pm today.

Mayor Beng Climaco has issued Executive Order 161 enjoining all schools, government entities, private institutions, NGOs, parishes, church-based communities and other people’s organizations to join and support the weeklong activities on Feb. 1-7, 2016.

Organized by the United Nations Interfaith Harmony Partners- Zamboanga, the weeklong activities include Feb.2 - Youth Leaders’ conference at the JMR Hall at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in La Purisima from 1-2pm; Feb. 3- Blood letting activity 9am-4pm at the WMSU main campus and Because We Care: Interfaith Harmony in Healthcare at 3pm, West Metro Medical Center in Tumaga; Feb. 4- Gathering of Barangay Officials to strengthen Intercultural Link and Launching of the new program “Plan, care and Share at 9am-4pm at the Harmony Village in Sinunuc, Youth Peace Convention: Educating for Harmony, Justice and Peace at 9am-12nn at the JMR Hall in ADZU, Forum with tricycle operators and drivers at 10am-12nn at Centro Pastoral in Gov. Camins and Youth in Action: A Service of Love, Care and Solidarity at the Zamboanga City Medical Center; Feb. 5- Presentation of WIHW and its message to Muslim Communities and Education-Formation for Zamboanga City Jail Male Inmates: A Foster and Slogan Making Contest at the City Jail from 9am-11am.

On Feb. 6, the Harmony Youth Day will be held from 8am-4pm at the Harmony Village in Putogo, blood letting activity at the Zambo press Club office in Pilar Street and the Moral Ascendancy Program on WIHW spirit for the PNP- Region 9 at 10am at the Central Police Station and the Education and the Education-Formation for Zamboanga City Jail Female Inmates: Poster and Slogan Making Contest also at the City Jail from 1-3pm and on Feb. 7, there will be a prayer and message of WIHW during the Eucharistic celebration, a special service at the Home for the Aged at 9am at the Talon-talon followed by the culminating activity at the celebrity hall of Astoria Hotel from 2-5pm.

The observance of WIHW stemmed from a resolution approved by the United Nations on Oct. 20, 2010 in recognition of “the imperative need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people.” — Sheila Covarubias
