Mayor Beng Climaco has reiterated her call for the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to act with dispatch on the request of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LOCP) to include local chief executives in the list of officials exempted from the implementation of the gun ban.

“We call on the COMELEC to consider the provision of security for local chief executives as we are more directly in touch with the people and our job and functions are 24/7, we live in perilous conditions,” the mayor said.

The LOCP approved the resolution during its recent meeting in Tagaytay in the presence of COMELEC chair Andres Bautista. It was the concern of the mayors that they should be included in the list of officials who can carry guns and have body guards during the election season which included only senators and congressmen.

Climaco said the COMELEC chair has vowed to refer the issue to the Commission and initially agreed with the mayors that the latter should also be given security details.

She expressed confidence that the request will be granted stating that even the COMELEC chair did not know that local chief executives were not included in the exemption. “But we live it to the Commission [to decide on the issue]”, she added even as she said that she likewise receive security threats but nonetheless roam around the city to show that Zamboanga City is safe.  — Sheila Covarrubias
