To help boost the morale of Zamboangueño athletes, Mayor Beng Climaco has issued a memorandum circular increasing cash incentives to sports competition medallists.

Issued on February 5, the memorandum is to take effect immediately. Based on the new rates, for national competitions, a gold medal is equivalent to an incentive of P1,500, silver medal- P1,000 and bronze medal- P700. For regional competitions such as the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA) meet, a gold medal is equivalent to an incentive of P1,000, silver medal- P700 while bronze medal- P500.

Mayor Climaco said the rate is being fixed to have a uniform rate in the granting of cash incentives to the athletes who garnered medals in the various sports competitions held in the country which brings honor to Zamboanga City.

City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano said the incentives of coaches likewise will be pegged equivalent to the highest incentive garnered by the respective medallist.

In the past, a gold medal was equivalent to P1,000; silver medal- P700 and bronze medal- P500 for national competitions. For regional competitions, a gold medal meant an incentive of P500; silver medal- P300 and bronze medal- P200. — Sheila Covarrubias
