Zamboanga City will be teeming with activities starting Monday, Feb. 22 in celebration of the city’s 79th Charter Anniversary dubbed as Dia de Zamboanga which falls on Friday, Feb. 26 marking the day when the first set of appointed officials took their oath of office.

Monday will be the opening of the 2nd Birds Festival drawing bird watchers from other parts of the country and abroad. The festival will kick off with the exhibits to include a poster and photographs competition at the motor pool building of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) Campus B. The activity is organized by the ZSCMST under Dr. Milavel Nazario.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23 will be the Birds Festival Run dubbed “Run to Save our Birds” at 5am from the ZSCMST main campus to campus B.

The welcome program as well as the judging of the poster making contest and amateur photography competitions will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the ZSCMST campus B starting at 7:30am and will be followed by the on-site bird watching at the school’s wetland.

February 24 will also be the city-wide open cheerdance competition back to back with the drum and lyre competition (high school level) at the City Coliseum in Tetuan at 1pm.

The annual Achievers’ Night will be held on Feb. 5, Thursday at 7pm at Centro Latino which is a recognition of outstanding Zamboangueños in various fields. On the same day, the city will join the observance of the 30th anniversary of EDSA People Power revolution, which is declared a special non-working day nationwide.

February 26, Friday is a special non-working day in Zamboanga City and will be celebrated with the grand civic-military parade at 3pm from the Fire Station in Ledesma Street to Paseo del Mar where the main program will be held.

Other activities organized by private groups will also be held on Feb. 26 and these include the WMSU College of Law: PaLAWro 2016 fun run at 5:30am from City Mall in Tetuan to the WMSU Campus in Baliwasan; opening of the 3-day Zamboanga Open Invitational Bowling Tournament at Tebi and Sean Recreational Center; Bluephoria 2: Street party at the Bigwags Bistro in Pasonanca at 7pm and the Globe Alegria na Zamboanga at Paseo del Mar at 6pm.

February 28 is also a special day in Zamboanga as residents will commemorate the centennial birth anniversary of legendary Mayor Cesar C. Climaco with various activities to include the unveiling of the marker at the Pasonanca tree house.

The Juicy Cologne inter-school dance competition will also be held at 1pm at the WMSU gymnasium.

The Dia de Zamboanga activities will cap with the Speak Out Zamboanga forum: 5th Cesar Climaco Young Leaders Assembly at Centro Latino in Paseo del Mar at 8am. — Sheila Covarrubias
