A 13 year-old high school student died while two others narrowly escaped death after they were swept away by strong river current in Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur last Tuesday morning.

Supt. Leonardo Bala, information officer of the Police  Regional Office-9, identified the victim as Jay-Ann Acain Taping, 13, a 2nd year high school student of Guipos National High School.

A police report disclosed that Taping together with her two classmates were crossing a river on their way to school around 9 a.m. when strong water current swept Taping away. Her two classmates tried to save her but failed as the raging water also threatened to sweep away prompting them to move to safer area.

The incident was immediately reported to school authorities who intensified a rescue operation. Hours later the body was discovered in the culvert of a spillway several meters away from where Taping collapsed. — Noning R. Antonio
