Mayor Beng Climaco led the multitude of women participants from all sectors in the City for the annual march commemorating the Women’s Month celebration Tuesday morning, March 1.

Together with delegations from the different national and local agencies, Climaco helmed the kickoff activity for the Women’s Month celebration with the opening parade from the City Fire Station which culminated in a program and fund-raising campaign at Paseo del Mar.

Climaco, a staunch advocate for women’s rights, lauded the strength and resiliency of the Zamboangueño even as she called on women to know and assert their rights as guaranteed by the Republic Act 9710, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for women.

Climaco was one of the principal authors of the Magna Carta which was passed as law August 2009 during her stint as the City’s representative.

In support of this year’s Women’s Month celebration, which is anchored on the theme “El buen estar di Juana, pone na Agenda”, participants dressed in violet and purple shirts and carried with them agenda placards recognizing the role of women in society.

Through the efforts of the Gender and Development Technical Working Group and the Local Council of Women, the month-long Women’s Month celebration will also be heralded by the “In Her Shoes” initiative on March 7, a campaign against sexual harassment and violence against women which will have participating men walking from Paseo del Mar to City Hall in women’s shoes to understand and raise awareness on biases faced by women; a dental check-up and stress debriefing to BJMP Women detainees on March 8, and; the turnover of bleachers at Western Mindanao State University on March 8.

Also highlighting the celebration are the Inauguration/Blessing of the Women’s Production Center in Sta. Maria and Women’s Trade Fair on March 14, and the WoMEN’s Congress: An Orientation on Women’s Rights on March 14.
