Mayor Beng Climaco highlighted the importance of women’s roles in society and the need for women to be aware of their rights during the Women’s Month celebration kickoff yesterday morning, March 1.

In her message, Climaco, a staunch advocate for women empowerment, encouraged all women to be aware and to practice the rights guaranteed to them by Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta for Women.

At least a thousand participants clad in purple joined the annual walk for women from the City Fire Station to Paseo del Mar bearing agenda placards to raise awareness on issues affecting women.

This year’s Women’s Month celebration theme is “El buen estar di Juana, pone na Agenda”.

Accompanying Mayor Climaco were Gender and Development Vice Chairperson Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar, Councilor Josephine Pareja and Local Council for Women head Dr. Milagros L. Fernandez.

The opening program also served as a fund raising campaign for three organizations – the Social Development Center, women in need at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the Women and Children Desk of the Philippine National Police.

The initial contribution of participating agencies to the opening program amounted to approximately Php 37,000.

The Magna Carta of Women affirms the role of women in nation building and promotes empowerment and equal opportunities for women.

Climaco was one of the principal authors of RA 9710, approved August 2009, during her tenure as the City’s representative. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
