The City Government through the Zamboanga City Rabies Eradication and Control Coordinating Council (ZCRECCC) will spearhead activities for Anti-Rabies Awareness Month with kick off ceremonies set at Barangay Ayala Wednesday, March 2.

City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola said the opening salvo of activities will be a motorcade from the City proper to the Ayala Central School where a short program will follow. A ceremonial vaccination of pets will follow with Mayor Beng Climaco leading the event along with members of the ZCRECCC and other stakeholders.

Themed “End Rabies, Now Na!”, the anti-rabies awareness month celebration is pursuant to Executive Order No. 84 issued by then President Joseph Estrada in March 1999 declaring March as the Rabies Awareness Month with the ultimate goal of having a rabies-free Philippines by 2020.

This year’s the activity will be highlighted with the Rabies Quiz Bee in Ayala District among Grades 4,5 and 6 sponsored by the Zamboanga City Division of City Schools.

The annual Rabies Awareness Month aims to provide people the proper knowledge on the prevention of the disease and its management. Proper vaccination of household pets especially dogs and cats and information about avoiding stray rabid animals are some of the ways rabies can be prevented, Dr. Arriola added. —Sheila Covarrubias
