A young Zamboangueño biker finished third in the Ronda Pilipinas-Mindanao leg, held in Bukidnon City from February 20-27.

Jhon Michael Wee Banias, 18 years old from Sta. Maria was the sole biker from Zamboanga who participated in the Ronda Pilipinas, an annual professional road cycling competition organized by courier service provider LBC Express, according to City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano. The Mindanao leg, with 60 participants, started in Butuan City to Cagayan de Oro and Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

Mayor Beng Climaco through Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde will lead recognition rites for Banias Monday, March 7, during the City Government flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall.

Touted as the biggest cycling race in the country, Ronda Pilipinas this year is going a 3-leg traditional route covering Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao starting with the Butuan event. The Visayas route from Bago City to Roxas City will be held March 11-17 and the Luzon route from Sta. Rosa Laguna to Baguio City will be held April 3-8. The competition is open for riders that quality in the under 23 and Open Elite divisions.

Meanwhile, Atilano said, Zamboanga City has sent a 149- powerhouse delegation to the Philippine National Games Championship set from March 7-11 in Lingayen, Pangasinan. The city’s delegation is composed of athletes who were qualified during the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao leg held last year.

The city’s delegation is participating in various events such as archery, arnis, badminton, boxing, futsal-men, futsal-women, karatedo, muaythai, pencak silat, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling. — Sheila Covarrubias
