Senatorial candidate Francis Tolentino on Friday  said that “health insurance for children” is one of his priority programs if  given the chance in the May 9 elections.

In a press conference held at Grand Astoria Hotel’s Lotus Restaurant, Tolentino said that children from Grade 1 up to college level must be insured as it is stated in the Preamble of the Philippine Constitution and in Republic Act 7875 otherwise known as the National Health Insurance Act of 1995.

Tolentino cited as an example the case of a high school female cheer dance leader who landed in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after she suffered a skull fracture during a rehearsal. Her family is not financially capable to produce the right amount of money for her skull operation.

The predicament  of the victim is being looked at by a local radio station through a fund raising campaign involving radio listeners.

Tolentino said that if the government had implemented health insurance for children, the girl’s family would not have been facing such predicament for her treatment and recovery

Tolentino added that health insurance for children must be implemented as it is provided for in the Preamble and in RA 7875 apart from beneficiaries or dependent.

Meanwhile, Tolentino voiced concern on the problem of rotational blackouts and water crisis in the country.

He said he will introduce laws to address these problems. – Dan Toribio
