A 31-year-old man was arrested after he held hostage his brother-in-law in Barigon, Tubungan yesterday morning.

Arrested was Ricky Palad, 31, married, a truckman from Pagadian City and temporarily residing in Tugbungan.

A police report disclosed that Palad and his wife had engaged in marital spat around 1 a.m. at their residence due to some domestic misunderstanding.

The couple’s altercation continued until 3 a.m. in which he armed himself with a pair of scissors and  seized nine-year-old Gerry, brother of his wife.

From their house in Barigon, Palad brought the boy to the ricefield owned by a retired policeman in Tugbungan.

The hostage-taking incident was reported to the barangay council of Tugbungan whose officials responded immediately  and tried to negotiate Palad to release the boy.

Palad continued holding the boy at knifepoint until 7 a.m. and men from the Tetuan Police Station led by Supt. Nonito Asdai tried to persuade him release the boy.

Palad demanded for a carabao for him to go back home to Pagadian City.

Amid the negotiation, Cesar Cristobal, a barangay kagawad of Tugbungan managed to attack Palad and free the boy.

Policemen immediately handcuffed Palad and brought him to the police station.

The boy was unharmed but traumatized.

Police have readied charges against the Palad. – Dan Toribio
