The Palafox Associates conducted yesterday the second public consultation on the comprehensive land use plan, zoning ordinance and the city development plan geared towards making Zamboanga truly the country’s gateway to the Southeast Asian Growth Area.

Karima Palafox, daughter of the world renowned urban development planner Architect Felino Palafox, said the public consultations were necessary to make sure the proposals will jibe with the values of each of the stakeholders of the city.

“Our plans include enhancing the existing urban center of Zamboanga, where the developable land is limited. We also notice the development field is sprawling outward, so we’re studying to increase density where we can’t urbanize so that we don’t sprawl into the viable forest and farm lands,” Palafox said.

The Palafox Associates is tasked by the city government to help plan the development of Zamboanga, being the fastest growing city in Mindanao.

“If we don’t plan well, certain land uses might compromise what would be really good for most people in the city,” she said, explaining that in planning “we make sure that we balance the requirements for real estates, subdivisions, building constructions and even making the ports livelier and bustling.”

She further said planning also protects the arable lands, fisheries resources and other important values and resources of Zamboanga.— Vic Larato
