Government operatives seized on Monday night shipment of smuggled rice and cartons of cigarettes on board an unnamed motorlaunch along the Basilan Strait.

Customs Police Chief Lando Sangit said that the imported goods on board a wooden hulled boat came from Jolo, Sulu and was apprehended by the Philippine Navy.

The cargoes included Triple A rice in yellow sacks and 100 cartons of Fort cigarettes, all worth  some P1.6 million.

Sangit said the shipment has no consignee or name of the shipper or owner of the imported articles.

The seized articles were turned over tothe Bureau of Customs on Tuesday at Zamboanga City wharf.

According to Sangit, they will conduct proper inventory and documentation for the proper disposal of the imported articles. — Allen Abastillas
