When I was a barangay official for eight years, I never missed attending the birthday of Congressman Celso L. Lobregat.

Seven years after, and it is only this year, that I have the opportunity again to attend his birthday which he celebrated last Sunday, March 20, 2016 at La Vista Del Mar.

Personally, I considered Congressman L. Lobregat the champion of the Zamboangueños. It is a known fact when he was the Mayor of this beautiful city, he defended this city against inclusion into the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao as this was expressed by the voice of the people in several plebscites by voting NO.

During the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Congressman Lobregat together with a few of his colleagues in the City Government went to the Supreme Court to file a case for the non inclusion of Zamboanga City.

I can still remember, his late mother Mayor Maria Clara “Caling” Lobregat when I featured her in this column with this title, “The Voice in the Wilderness” because she was the only city official who was so vocal not to include Zamboanga City in the Expanded Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

I can still remember, when I was given the opportunity to deliver a message and my name was printed in the program in honor of Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, 3rd year death anniversary, held at the Maria Clara Lobregat Garden in Pasonanca.

Beautiful memories of the past related to the Lobregat family came into my mind when I was attending the birthday of this good man, Honorable Congressman Celso L. Lobregat of District 1, Zamboanga City.

P.S, I dedicate this article to Miss Madelyn Beltran and to her family and likewise to Punong Barangay of Recodo, Honorable Wahab Ibba.
