A man grabbed the spotlight during a religious pilgrimage Thursday in Abong Abong when he climbed the top of the grotto of Virgin Mary located at the cliff of Pulong Bato.

Rodel Salazar, 32, single, a native of Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay and temporarily residing in Sinubong went up the grotto around 5 p.m.,  but could not go down to  ground at the “Cruz Mayor”, making him the center of attraction of thousands of pilgrims and worshippers.

At this point, other devotees noticed the situation of Salazar and reported it to the authorities.

Acting on the report, policemen and personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection and rescuers from the ZDRRMO rushed to the place and successfully rescued Salazar around 10:45 p.m.

Salazar was taken to the Zamboanga City Medical Center for medical attention.

Authorities found out that Salazar had been a patient at the mental ward of the hospital last year based on his medical record. — Dan Toribio
