Mayor Beng Climaco has commended a tanod of Barangay Tugbungan, this city for his heroic act that saved a boy from his hostage taker last week.

Climaco said the heroic deed of Cesar Cristobal, a barangay tanod of Tugbungan, was worthy of commendation and should serve as example to barangay officials to serve and protect their constituents.

The mayor presented Cristobal with a certificate of commendation Monday during her regular press briefing in City Hall in the presence of Tugbungan barangay chairperson Agustin Graciano Jr. and barangay tanod Alvin Tuazon, who also helped peacefully resolve the hostage-taking incident.

To recall, a hostage-taking incident occurred at Barigon, Tugbungan early morning of March 21 when a certain Ricky Palad, 31, single, of said place, took a 10-year-old boy hostage.

A report disclosed that Palad grabbed the boy and took him to a nearby rice field, where he threatened to kill him with the use of a small scissors.

Upon learning the incident, Cristobal rushed to the scene. While trying to convince the suspect to release the boy, he maneuvered and quickly grabbed the boy unharmed.

Only then that responding policemen arrived, urging the suspect to surrender and conducted him to the Police Station in Tetuan.

The boy later identified as Gerry Epoltero was the younger brother of the suspect’s live-in partner.

But, in the police report on the incident it was the other way around, prompting the mayor to have it investigated, believing the earlier version where tanod Cristobal was the one who saved the boy from his hostage-taker.— Vic Larato
