The warehouse of the City General Services Office located at Sitio Muroc, Abong-Abong, Pasonanca was razed in a fire yesterday morning.

In an interview at the fire scene, Pasonanca Barangay Chairman Epigenio “Jun” Julian said the fire started around 7 a.m. It was responded by firemen from the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Water tankers from the Zamboanga City Water District and Philippine Red Cross also rushed to the place to refill water for the fire trucks.

The security guard on duty, Mr. Pelias told DZT he relieved his co-security guard around 6 a.m. and a few minutes later he noticed flames coming from a corner of the warehouse which he believed was caused by a faulty electrical wiring.

City General Services Office chief Engr. Rey Dela Cruz said all the unserviceable government properties including several motorcycles kept inside the warehouse were razed in the blaze.

Dela Cruz estimated the damage at P1 million.

The BFP and the police were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

In a separate statement,  De la Cruz said the building houses junk and unserviceable items prior to auction. He estimated the acquisition cost of the items at P2.5 million to include the building’s construction cost at P180,000.

The auction cost however is estimated at only less than a million pesos.

According to de la Cruz the items which included junk and unserviceable air condition units, computers and over 20 motorcycles were up for auction after they have been inspected by the Commission on Audit (COA).

The items were supposed to be auctioned by kilo.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has yet to submit its official report of the investigation of the fire incident.

With the incident, De la Cruz said a permanent building is necessary to house junk and unserviceable items of the city. — Dan Toribio with report from Sheila Covarrubias
