Zamboangueños going to Paseo del Mar, Plaza del Pilar and even Pasonanca Park for leisure would have been enjoying free wi-fi, courtesy of Globe Telecom, had the Sangguniang Panlungsod acted on the memorandum of agreement between Mayor Beng Climaco and the Globe.

This was learned during the press briefing Monday in City Hall where Mayor Climaco bannered the award given to Zamboanga City as one of the emerging cities in the Philippines for information and technology operations at the 2015 Top Next Wave Cities and Center of Excellence for IT-BPM in Makati City last March 30.

Climaco said the award was conferred by the ICTO and the IBMPAP on the basis of the city’s showing “high potential” and foundation to attract and host IT-BPM clients and are considered as the “next top 10 Next Wave Cities.”

She said the award would boost up the pending proposal to install free wi-fi services at Paseo del Mar and other public places, including most school and health centers in the city.

Allan Aizon of the City’s Computer Division said the memorandum of agreement remains pending in the City Council.

“We are waiting for the MOA to be returned with the Council’s concurrence so that the mayor can sign it and ICTO together with Globe can provide the free wi-fi at Paseo and other designated areas,” Aizon said.

He was confident the free wi-fi zones as identified by ICTO and Globe can be realized this year, adding that the Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) in Divisoria was also considered in the free wi-fi proposal.— Vic Larato
