The Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled (PHILSPADA) Zamboanga team brought pride and joy anew to the city as its members won a total of 19 medals in the recently concluded 2016 Para National Games held in Marikina City.

Headed by Mr. Teddy Kahil, the Zamboanga City PHILSPADA delegation garnered two gold, five silver, and 12 bronze medals in the national sports competition which ran from March 28 to April 2.

The Para National Games is spearheaded by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), through the PHILSPADA – National Paralympic Committee of the Philippines in coordination with the Department of Education.

This year’s 2016 Para National Games featured ten sport activities: athletics, swimming, table tennis, powerlifting, boccia, badminton, chess, goalball, tenpin bowling, and wheelchair basketball.

The aim of the 2016 Para National Games is to identify a new core of athletes and serve as the basis for the selection of the Philippine team for future participation in international competitions such as the ASEAN Para Games, Asian Youth Para Games, and the World Para Games.

The national tilt also aims to encourage and promote the participation of persons with disabilities in mainstream sporting activities, and ensure that children with disabilities will have equal access to play, recreation, leisure, and sport activities. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
