Police have rounded up 16 “freelance”sex workers from the different downtown streets in a renewed campaign to rid Zamboanga City of prostitution and prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

The first operation was carried out Tuesday night by personnel of the Women and Children Protection Desk and some members of the central police station with a surprise raid along Nuñez and Tomas Claudio Streets where the team rounded up 10 free lance sex workers.

The youngest among the women is 20 years old while the oldest was 39.

On the second night of operation on Wednesday, the team struck the streets of Nuñez, Tomas Claudio, La Purisima and Gov. Lim Avenue  where they rounded up six freelance sex workers including the “bugaw” (pimp).

The youngest was a 28 years-old while the oldest was 39 who was already taken on the first night of operation.

The 16 women were taken to the Central Police Station for booking.

Free lance prostitutes ply the sex trade within the downtown commercial district, offering paid sex among locals, transients and soldiers.

Early this year, a national television network exposed a prostitution operation at an IDP transition site, where sex is offered as cheap as P20.

The City Health Office has warned against sexually transmitted diseases, especially the dread HIV/AIDS  which has already spread in  Zamboanga City with some fatalities in recent years. – Dan Toribio
