The city government today joins the national observance of the Araw ng Kagitingan at the Freedom Fighters Shrine in Rizal Park to honor and memorialize the valor, heroism, and brave deeds of Filipino war veterans.

Mayor Beng Climaco along with local government officials and personnel will grace the morning event, which will kick off with a formal flag raising ceremony to be followed by a floral offering and a commemorative program.

Themed “Isabuhay ang Kagitingan, Kapayapaan, at Pagkaisahan, Kamtin ang Mithi ng Kaunlaran,” the 2016 observance of the Araw ng Kagitingan intends to promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideals, and heroic deeds of the Filipino war veterans.

The Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration is also part of the week-long Veterans Week, which runs from April 5 to 11. Activities for the week-long celebration will be spearheaded by the Zamboanga City Veterans District, and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP) in cooperation with the local government of Zamboanga City.

Araw ng Kagitingan marks the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. It highlights the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II when Japan conquered the Philippines.

The surrender of Bataan led to the gruesome Death March of more than 76,000 Filipino and American soldiersturned prisoners of war who walked 90 miles from Bataan to Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. Thousands of them died while on their way due to starvation, dehydration, fatigue, and abuse, according to historical accounts.— Jasmine Mohammadsali
