Mayor Beng Climaco has welcomed four new trial court judges, saying their appointment was critical to the speedy administration of justice in this part of the region.

City Legal Officer Atty. Jesus C. Carbon Jr. named the newly appointed judges as Vera Torrefranca Vergara of RTC Branch 14, Grace Lina Pesy Gagarra-Bernardo of RTC Branch 17, Ronces Valles Bolo Filoteo of Branch 32, and Shaldilyn Bara Bangsaja of RTC Branch 33.

Carbon said two of the new judges were filling in the two old courts, whose judge was murdered while the other has retired. The two other new judges are filling in two new salas.

To recall, four new salas were approved for Zamboanga City at the behest of Mayor Climaco during her incumbency as congresswoman of the first district.

“For so long a time, there was a need for functioning judges for reasons that there are so many cases clogging in the present courts,” Carbon, an erstwhile trial court judge, said.

The drug court alone, he said, has more than 2,000 cases and the respondents are also crowding the city jails.

Carbon likewise said the city government had appropriated an initial amount of P15-million for the new salas in 2015, and the amount was increased to P17 million for this year.

Additional courts will also be constructed at the Hall of Justice.

“We hope there will be a visible improvement in the administration of justice in the city,” the city legal officer said.— Vic Larato
