Mayor Beng Climaco has advised residents to remain calm but vigilant as Zamboanga City was jolted by an intensity 6 earthquake Thursday dawn sending waves across the city and other parts of Zamboanga peninsula region.

Mayor Climaco said people should not panic but instead take necessary precautions in cases of similar incidents in the future.

The chief executive immediately tasked the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to dispatch teams to coastal areas and to coordinate with concerned agencies and authorities to check on the situation following the 2:21am (April 14) tremor.

Through the social media, many people expressed shock and obviously panicked following the slightly strong earthquake.

Per PHIVOLCS, the earthquake registered at magnitude 4.7 near Gutalac, Zamboanga del Norte with reported intensity 5 felt in Zamboanga City.  The agency said aftershocks are possible with no possibility of tsunami.

Meanwhile, the mayor directed the City Social Welfare and Development Service office (CSWDO) to provide the necessary assistance to families affected by the incident in barangay Sinunuc.

She likewise instructed CDRRMO head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario to review and to reiterate information campaign regarding contingency plans in cases of earthquakes and other calamities- be they natural or man-made. — Sheila Covarrubias
