Rehabilitation of the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex commonly known as the grandstand in Baliwasan started two weeks ago under the auspices of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

OIC City Administrator Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said P187 million has been allocated for the reconstruction/rehabilitation effort with a project duration of less than 10 months.

The project is undertaken by a private contractor, RCDG joint venture with RU Aquino with funds coming from the DWPH-Manila.

The grandstand it is recalled was designated as the biggest evacuation center in the aftermath of the 2013 siege housing approximately 20,000 families at that time. It was officially closed as evacuation center last July 2015 with government officials headed by Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman and Mayor Beng Climaco and humanitarian agencies leading the ceremonial closure.

The reconstructed/rehabilitated grandstand is expected to be grandiose building and sports complex.

Apolinario is fielding an engineer to the grandstand to monitor the progress of the project and to submit a report to City Hall on a regular basis. — Sheila Covarrubias
