Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday, April 28, for the opening of the month-long summer sports program dubbed Basic Sports Summer Camp: Learn to Play a Sport at the City Coliseum.

In her message, Climaco encouraged the hundreds of participants who registered for the program to make the most out of the opportunity, to practice self-discipline, have fun.

Now on its 21st year, the Learn to Play program is an annual activity initiated by the City Mayor’s Office under the City Sports Development Office, in coordination with local sports association. In its 21 years, the program has produced top-notched Zamboangueño athletes, including weightlifters Nestor Colonia and Hidilyn Diaz.

City Sports Division chief Dr. Cecil Atilano emphasized that the program is intended for young children with potential who will be carefully selected to be trained for the athletic teams representing Zamboanga City in regional, national, and international competitions.

Moreover, the program intends to teach young athletes the spirit of sportsmanship, fair play, and the values of discipline, determination, and respect.

For the 2016 program, a total of 27 sport disciplines will be taught to an estimated 4,000 registrants. The following are this year’s roster of sport events: archery, arnis, athletics, basketball, badminton, baseball, bowling, body building, boxing, chess, dance sport, football, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, muay thai, pencak silat, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwando, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, and wushu.

The opening program was participated in by Climaco, Councilor Elong Natividad, presidents of local sports associations, and other barangay officials. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
