City Hall on Tuesday facilitated a coordinative meeting of all agencies concerned to help ensure the conduct of an orderly, peaceful and honest election on Monday, May 9.

The coordinative meeting, presided by OIC City Administrator and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) Chief Dr. Elmeir Apolinario discussed all issues and concerns related to Monday polls to include security, transportation, power supply and logistics among others.

Present during the meeting were representatives from the Commission on Elections, Sangguniang Panlungsod, various City Government offices, Zamboanga City Police Office, Philippine Coast Guard, Task Force Zamboanga and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) City Office and other agencies.

Apolinario said issues such as security and transport of the election materials and the board of election tellers including its distribution and retrieval; power supply before, during and after election; personnel who will respond in times of need; the preparations in the schools that will be used as polling places; the need for watercrafts to transport the election paraphernalia and the BEIs to the islands and numerous others were tackled during the meeting.

“We try to ensure that preparations are on track to ensure that everything will be in order during the election on Monday,” the OIC city administrator said.

The local government unit takes active role during elections. The Treasurer’s Office and the General Services Office act as repository of election paraphernalia repository as well as facilitate the distribution and retrieval of the same; the SP or City Council serve as the venue for the canvassing of the ballots and the City Engineer’s Office together with the CEO will provide the manpower needed to perform the various tasks. -Sheila Covarrubias
