A police official was killed while his two men were wounded in an ambush in Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte Wednesday night.

The fatality was identified as Sr. Insp. Mirdan Usama, team leader of the 1st Maneuvering Platoon of the Regional Public Safety Battalion. Wounded were PO1 Melvin Alasad Padela and PO1 Panganiban. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Usama sustained gunshot wounds in the body and died on the spot.

A police report disclosed that Usama and his men were conducting mobile checkpoint in Barangay Camul in Tampilisan when a private vehicle passed and the driver did not stop.

Usama with PO1 Padela and PO1 Panganiban chased the speeding vehicle but when they reached a dimly lit part of Barangay Camul, they were rained with bullets by gunmen positioned on both sides of the road.

Usama died on the spot while Panganiban and Padela sustained bullet wounds in their body.

Men of the Tampilisan Municipal Police Station led by Insp. Ronald Allane Tingas conducted pursuit operation that resulted in the arrest of Alson Chan with and companions.

Chan’s arrest was not explained regarding any participation in the ambush of the policemen. – Dan Toribio
