Gunmen killed a candidate for mayor in Lantapan, Bukidnon, early Saturday.

Superintendent Surki Sereñas, Northern Mindanao Police spokesperson, identified the fatality as Armando Ceballos, a resident of Barangay Balila, Lantapan.

Ceballos is running for mayor of Lantapan town as an independent candidate. He is running against Ernie Devibar of the Bukidnon Paglaum Party.

GMA News quoted Sereñas as saying that 10 masked men barged in Ceballos’ home and shot him several times.

The gunmen used M16 and M14 rifles in the attack, based on the spent shells recovered by police probers from the crime scene.

Sereñas said they have yet to determine if the killings was election-related.

The shooting happened even as the police is on full alert in preparation for the May 9 local and national elections.
