A first-time voter was hurt in explosions that hit an elementary school in Maimbung, Sulu on Monday morning.

Superintendent Cerrazid Umabong, director of the Sulu Police Provincial Office, identified the injured voter as Mizar Jawari, 18.

Jawari was standing in front of a voting precinct at the Jamalul Central Elementary School in Maimbung town when the explosions happened at around 7:45 a.m.

Two more explosions hit the school.

Authorities said a part of an improvised explosive device hit Jawari in the head.

The victim is currently under observation in a hospital.

Umabong said investigations are ongoing to identify the group behind the bombing and their motive.

Incumbent Mayor Maimbung Samir Tan is seeking a reelection. He is unopposed. — GMA News
