Mudslides caused by heavy rains wreaked havoc in barangay Lunzuran Monday morning, May 16, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

According to CDRRMO Head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, eight homes were reported damaged in the mudslide incident which occurred at Riverside Sitio Cabesa Moro in barangay Lunzuran. Initial investigations show the mudslide was caused by the heavy downpour on Sunday dawn which saturated the loose soil uphill of an on-going earthwork and clearing work being done in the area.

“Accordingly, tiene daw se li ara housing development [project],” said Apolinario.

A team from the City Planning and Development Office was immediately sent out to investigate and verify the initial reports to ascertain if the project developers have the proper clearances, and if they have any culpability for the mudslide incident.

The City Government immediately mobilized emergency response to assist residents and homeowners who were affected by the mudflow. There were no casualties and only one reported injury in the incident, added Apolinario.

Investigations by concerned offices were also launched.

Aside from the damage to homes, the mudflow also damaged a portion of the riprap/slope protection structure of Lunzuran River. The City Engineer’s Office has dispatched their own team to conduct investigations.

“We requested the City Planning and the City Engineer’s Office to submit immediately their reports,” said Apolinario. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
