The City Engineer’s Office (CEO) has been directed to check on the integrity of the Viva Theater building razed by the 4-hour conflagration Monday morning.

OIC City Administrator Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, who is the concurrent chief of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) in a letter to City Engineer Luis Despalo said it is crucial to have the building checked based on the provisions of the National Building Code.

The CEO Building Inspection Division will undertake the inspection in accordance with the Building Code provisions and will come up with the necessary recommendation.

Apolinario said it is imperative to know the stability or integrity of the building to thwart possible disasters in the future. “Under the building code if buildings are considered hazardous or unsafe, they should be demolished to prevent untoward incidents.”

The CDRRMO will come up with proper action based on the CEO inspection report and recommendation.

Meanwhile, the CEO conducts regular inspection of all buildings as part of the requirement in the renewal of business permits. — Sheila Covarrubias
