Supt. Salbino C. Piad, chief of the  Regional Maritime Unit 9,  disclosed that instead of a national headquarters, a special unit operations group will soon be established in Barangay Bolong, this city.

The project will be funded by the US Government.

Piad explained that the plan to set up the PNP Maritime Group national headquarters in Bolong which shaped up after the Zamboanga siege in 2013 in Bolong is no longer viable today.

“ We are now working for the transfer of the name of the land title to the Maritime Group and the clearances of right of ways,” Piad said.

On the other hand, the Special Gun Boat Unit of RMU 9 is also expected to be constructed in Lantawan, Basilan province. The project is also funded by the US government.    According to Piad, he is waiting for the result of the advice of the local  leaders on the reason that there are still people occupying in the area illegally.

“ Kailangan kasi ma clear  yung area bago ma-construct ang Special Gun Boat Unit building. We thank the local leaders in Lantawan lea by Mayor Tahira Ismael for helping RMU 9 clear the illegal settlers in the area”, Piad said.

He also said that Special Gun Boat that will be constructed in Lantawan is equal to the Special Gun Boat Unit constructed in Bongao Tawi- Tawi and Palawan which were also funded by the US government in previous years.

Meanwhile, The operations of RMU 9 two gunboats during the May 9 election in Sulu was very successful.

Piad said the operations included random seaborne activities and monitoring of  boats movement in the different coasts and islands of Sulu.

“Wala namang nangyari na napa-engage sa putukan ng baril ang mga tropa. Support lang kami sa ibang troopers ng PNP and AFP,” Piad said. — Allen Abastillas
