City Mayor Beng Climaco lauded the heroism of the late General Vicente Alvarez during the 8th Dia de General Vicente Alvarez commemorative program May 18, Wednesday.

In her message, the chief executive said the heroism and bravery of General Vicente Alvarez, the Zamboangueno revolutionary hero whose gallantry led to the surrender of Spanish soldiers in 1899, serves as an example of “amor para nacion y amor para na ciudad” that is worth emulating.

“He was the one fighting for the defense of the Philippines in Zamboanga City… ele ya pwede salva con deaton ciudad. We are recognized as one of the cities where we have the last surrender del maga Español,” said Climaco.

Joining Mayor Climaco were the family and relatives of the late General Alvarez. Alvarez’s great-granddaughter Georgina Alvarez delos Reyes expressed the family’s appreciation for the City Government’s continued efforts to honor the late General.

The commemorative activity kicked off early Wednesday morning with a mass at Fort Pilar, and a program and wreath-laying ceremony Plaza Vicente Alvarez. This was immediately followed by the 1st Neo-Ethnic Dance competition held at Centro Latino.

The commemorative program honoring General Alvarez has been institutionalized as one of the City Government’s official events through City Ordinance 334 which sets May 18 of every year as the Dia de General Vicente Alvarez.

It marks the day when the General led the fight for sovereignty resulting to the surrender of Spanish forces led by Gov. General Diego de los Rios on May 18, 1899 at Fort Pilar. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
