Acting Mayor Cesar Iturralde assisted by OIC City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario on Friday convened a meeting of the City Traffic Management Committee to address traffic issues in preparation for the opening of schools next month.

During the meeting, the Traffic Division of the Zamboanga City Police Office recommended various schemes in certain areas in the city and school zones to prevent traffic problems when classes open soon.

Certain areas were recommended for one-way parking while other areas will be included in the imposition of a traffic rerouting scheme based on the recommendation of the police.

Iturralde said the City Government is facilitating the preparations to ensure close coordination of all agencies concerned.

Aside from traffic, other school needs including the students’ and teachers’ safety and protection are also being looked into by the city government, according to the acting mayor.

Iturralde said all the traffic measures should be in place a week or two before the opening of classes to make people aware and used to the new schemes that would be in place.

More meetings are set in the coming days to finalize preparations. — Sheila Covarrubias
