Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn T. Uy, concurrently the chairperson of the Regional  Development Council 9 (RDC-9), warned the other day that the region will soon experience acute power shortage if officials will not tap other sources of energy.

Uy said that Region 9 leaders have been depending too much on the Maria Cristina Falls as the main source of power without considering and exploring other alternative sources.

She said there are several sources of energy in Mindanao and in other parts of the country that should be explored like what has been done in other parts of the world.
She said there is a need to maximize the use of solar, hydro and other sources of energy because the demand for power has increased and will increase further in the future.

At present Uy said Dipolog City is already experiencing a power shortage which affects most especially the business sector.
She said that Dipolog City experiences blackout every Saturday with unstable power voltage.

Uy however said that Dipolog and the entire region will achieve stable power situation in the future with the maximize use of solar and hydro sources of energy.
She revealed that a Japanese expert has conducted a feasibility study on the possible establishment of a hydroplant that would tap the two big rivers in Dipolog City and Dapitan City.

She explained that putting up a hydroplant is very expensive but sustainable in the future. — Allen Allen Abastillas
