Zamboanga City’s population is now 861,799 based on the 2015 population census conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), formerly National Statistics Office in August last year.

This, as President Aquino signed Proclamation 1269 dated May 18, 2016 declaring the updated official population figures based on the August 2015 census.

Zamboanga’s total population is 54,670 more than the 807,129 figure in 2010. Population growth rate is down from 2.98% in 2000-2010 to 2.38% in 2010-2015.

Out of the 98 barangays in the city, Talon-talon is the most populous with 34,916 followed by Mampang with 34,312; Tumaga – 30, 824; Tetuan – 29,785; Calarian- 28,899; San Roque- 27,889; Pasonanca – 27,374; Sta. Maria – 25,185; Baliwasan- 25,042 and Tugbungan – 23,837.

For the entire Zamboanga Peninsula, the population is now 3,629,783 with Zamboanga del Norte to include Dipolog and Dapitan cities -1,011,393;  Zamboanga del Sur to include Pagadian City - 1,010,674 Zamboanga Sibugay – 633,129  and Isabela City in Basilan– 112,788.

Zamboanga City is one of the 33 highly urbanized cities in the country. Four HUCs had surpassed the 1 million population mark- Quezon City, Manila City, Davao City and Caloocan City.

The Population Census was undertaken by the PSA in August 2015 pursuant to Republic Act 10625 also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order 352 which stipulates the conduct of a mid-decade census primarily to update the population count in all barangays nationwide.

The population counts were based on census questionnaires accomplished by about 90,000 enumerators deployed during the nationwide census taking, according to a PSA press release. — Sheila Covarrubias
