The Zamboanga City Medical Society (ZCMS) bagged the Pujalte Award for exemplary humanitarian service during times of calamities during the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) annual convention, May 20,  in Cebu City.

ZCMS President, Dr. Zaida Sadain Urao said the ZCMS bagged the Pujalte Award to include third place in community medicine service Category 4 where ZCMS bested 126 medical societies in the Philippines.

Two plaques were handed to Urao by PMA President Dr. Ma. Minerva Calimag and Dr. Jose Asa Sabil, chairman on awards and also a former PMA president.

The Pujalte Award was given to only two medical societies, the ZCMS and Pangasinan Medical Society. ZCMS also bagged the same award last year while for the first place in community medicine service Category 4,  it was won by Ilocos Medical Society. Second place was Aklan Medical Society followed by Zamboanga.

Urao said the award was given by PMA to ZCMS due to its several projects especially for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who were affected by the 2013 Zamboanga Siege as well as for other projects.

Some of the accomplishments of the ZCMS include the conduct of free clinic in Basilan and Tawi Tawi, free clinic for the IDP’s, and assisted in the surgery of Zamboanga Siege victims.

Aside from these, 15 medical missions were also conducted in various communities and in the ZCMS office, lecture on disaster preparedness for doctors, and the society also adopted Barangay San Roque in tandem with Barangay Captain Joselito Macrohon, where they constructed a jogging area to include placement of health quotes and quotes about cleanliness where this was used as an alternative jogging site.

ZCMS is a component Society of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA). There are more or less 700 doctors in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula who are members of the ZCMS. — R.G. A A. Go
