Maasin Barangay Chairman Misael “Doglo” Bernardo turned over the full payment for his 60 scholars in a simply ceremony held at the Maasin Learning Center last July 12.
During the turnover ceremony that was attended by the parents of the scholars, Bernardo reminded them to study very well and value the opportunity given by their parents because not all children are able to go to school due to poverty.

Bernardo related to the scholars and their parents the history of the “Doglo” scholarship program which started in year 2003 with only five students. In the succeeding years, the number went up to 10, then higher at 30 and in 2007 and up to the present, the scholars number 60.

“My little assistance to our indigent students really brings joy to my heart. My parents are also donors of this scholarship grant and they are very supportive of my agenca in the education aspect,” said the barangay chairman in an interview.

The school’s General PTA is the most benefited because it takes larger portion of the Doglo scholarship payment in which students are collected P65 each.

Bernardo is very supportive of the school’s General PTA where he served as president in the past. During his stint, he was able to legally register the organization with the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). He constructed the Rizal monument in the school with the support of the Board. He also worked for the school to get connection from the Zamboanga City Water District. His family donated a kiosk to the school and Bernardo was able to hire a security guard being paid through GPTA

“It is my happiness and pleasure to help poor children to be able to acquire education since I also studied in public school when I was Grade 1 and 2. My only request to all parents that it is our obligation to provide good education to our children no matter how hard is our situation. We should prepare their future and equip them to battle the hardship of life,” said Bernardo in his message delivered during the turnover ceremony.
