Zamboanga City will join the observance of National Flag Day on Saturday, May 28 in a fitting ceremony set at 7am at the Rizal Monument fronting City Hall with Mayor Beng Climaco spearheading the event.

Organized by the Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar Assembly (Fourth Degree in the Philippines) in cooperation with the Caballeros de Colon de Zamboanga Inc. (Knights of Columbus), the Flag Day celebration will kick off with a parade by the KOC members at 6am from Mayor Jaldon to the Rizal Monument.

The event marks the day when the Philippine flag was first unfurled after the Philippine Revolutionary Army headed by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo defeated the Spanish forces in the Battle of Alapan in Cavite on May 18, 1898.

The declaration of the national flag day is by virtue of RA 8491 otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines. — Sheila Covarrubias
