The  Department of Environment and Natural Resources  (DENR) in this city conducted  an Information, Education Campaign (IEC) on the importance to mankind the richness of the sea including  the biodiversity found in it  as the  country will  end  on Tuesday, May 31,  the observance of   the “Month of the Ocean.”

DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer for  Zamboanga City Ben Acana said about  300 DENR-Cenro employees joined Friday in  a clean up drive  along the coastline of  the Golf and Country Club in the village of Upper Calarian as their culmination activities.

The  Month of the Ocean is celebrated  annually in the Philippines during the month of May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57, issued in 1999 of the then President Joseph Ejercito Estrada.

Acana said his office  had also conducted an IEC among their employees and  environmentalists in this city with theme for this year “Biodiversity for Food and Sea-curity.”.

He said the IEC centered its discussion  about the importance of conservation and protection of biodiversity and coral reefs of the sea or the forest of  the ocean.

The conduct of IEC  also aimed  to promote awareness about biodiversity, ocean conservation and marine resource sustainability.

The  IEC had also increased the  appreciation and understanding of the public about DENR’s programs and projects especially on the coastal and marine environment, according to Acana. — Nonoy  E Lacson
